George Kostopoulos (Greece) |
George
K. Kostopoulos is currently professor and chairman of Physiology and
directs research at the Neurophysiology Unit of the Medical School of
the University of Patras, Greece. He received his MD in 1972 from the
University of Athens and his PhD in Physiology in 1977 from the
University of Saskatchewan, Canada. He has received training in basic
experimental neurophysiology (PhD supervisor J.W. Phillis) and EEG and
epileptology (postdoctoral fellow under P. Gloor). His early teaching appointments included
several years at McGill University, Departments of Neurology and
Neurosurgery, Montreal Neurological Institute and of Physiology.
Currently, besides teaching undergraduate and graduate neuroscience
courses at the University of Patras, he is the founding scientific
director of the Inter-School Graduate Studies Program: “Informatics for
Life Sciences” and its direction Neuroinformatics. He is a member of
the International Scientific Advisory Board and Education Editorial
Board of the International Brain Research Organization. He was a
founding member of the Hellenic Society for Neurosciences and its first
president (1985). He has received awards by the Medical
Research Council of Canada and in 1983 the “Michael Price for Epilepsy
Research”. His research interests in experimental epileptology have
evolved from the single neuron and neurotransmitters level to that of
several animal models and of human EEG/MEG and the relations between
